Global Wind Day – tomorrow!

» By | Published 14 Jun 2011 |

Wind energy is getting set to take to the global centre-stage in under 24 hours time for Global Wind Day. All over the world wind farms will be open, street stands and activities will take place, photo-competition winners will be announced, films will be screened and wind farms will be inaugurated.

Wind energy events are taking place in a whole host of countries from Mexico to New Zealand and all across Europe. Berlin will see the opening of a major new exhibition on wind energy at the capital’s Technical Museum, London will screen a new film alongside TV personality Bill Oddie, and New York will see the unveiling of a new wind energy standard, WindMade TM.

In Brussels, the EU-quarter will host a wind energy parade and a hugely popular public debate on EU energy policy after 2020.

Australia looks forward to its first Global Wind Day!

By Marju Tonisson, Infigen Energy

It’s the first time Global Wind Day will be celebrated in Australia. As it turns out, we couldn’t have delayed it any longer. When the Open Day at Capital Wind Farm, near a small town Bungendore in New South Wales, Australia was planned, we expected no more than 50 visitors. With less than 24 hours to go until the first tour, 340 people have registered.

It looks like it’s going to rain, the temperature will be hovering around 5 degrees, and naturally, it will be windy. Despite all this, organisers at Infigen Energy are looking forward to talking about wind turbines and how wind power is turned into electricity.

Iconic photos of wind turbines coming to Portugal

By Vera Costa, Enercon

In celebration of Global Wind Day, Enercon will hold a photo exhibition in Viana do Castelo – a historic and beautiful town in the north of Portugal.

During the month of May we invited keen photographers to take iconic pictures of wind turbines and we are now looking forward to displaying the results! The photo exhibition will be open from 15 June (Global Wind Day) until 19 June, and the winner can expect to receive a €500 prize. We will also present a second and third prize for the next most eye-catching pictures.

On Global Wind Day we will host many educational events for children about wind energy. Children are our future and we believe it is very important to teach them ways our society can become more sustainable and climate-friendly, and wind energy is a vital part of this!

For more information on our event, zoom in on Portugal on this map, or send us an email: [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you in Viana do Castelo!
